How to Change Your Gmail Password

You can change your Gmail password from your Google Account on a computer, Android phone, iPhone or iPad. Your Gmail password is also your Google Account password, so changing it changes the password you use for other Google services connected to the same account, such as YouTube and Google Drive.

How to change your Gmail password on a computer

To change your Gmail password on a computer:

1. Go to your Google Account and sign in if needed.
2. Select Security & sign-in.
3. Under How you sign in to Google, select Password.
4. Enter your current password again if Google asks you to verify your identity.
5. Enter your new password.
6. Select Change password.

Your new password will now be used when you sign in to Gmail and the other Google services connected to that Google Account.

How to change your Gmail password in the Gmail app

You can also change your Gmail password from a phone or tablet. The route is slightly different on iPhone and Android because Google Account settings are integrated more closely with Android.

How to change your Gmail password on iPhone or iPad

1. Open the Gmail app.
2. Tap your profile picture or initial in the top-right corner.
3. Tap Manage your Google Account.
4. Tap Personal info.
5. Under Other info and preferences for Google services, tap Password.
6. Sign in again if Google asks you to verify your identity.
7. Enter your new password.
8. Tap Next.

If you do not use the Gmail app on your iPhone or iPad, you can open your Google Account in a web browser and change the password there instead.

How to change your Gmail password on Android

On Android, Google provides the password controls through your Google Account settings.

1. Open your phone or tablet’s Settings app.
2. Tap Google.
3. Tap your name or profile, then Manage your Google Account.
4. Tap Security & sign-in.
5. Under How you sign in to Google, tap Password.
6. Sign in again if Google asks you to verify your identity.
7. Enter your new password.
8. Tap Change password.

You can also reach your Google Account from the Gmail app by tapping your profile picture and choosing Manage your Google Account.

What happens after you change your Gmail password?

Changing your Gmail password normally signs you out of your Google Account on most devices. Google says there are some exceptions, including devices used to verify your identity, some devices with third-party apps that have been given account access and certain home devices connected to your account.

If you use an app password for an older email app or device, Google also revokes existing app passwords when you change your main Google Account password. You may need to create a new app password before that app can connect again.

What if you forgot your Gmail password?

If you cannot remember your current password or cannot sign in, you need to recover the account rather than follow the normal password-change steps. Google will ask you to verify that the account belongs to you before allowing you to set a new password.

What if you are changing your password because your Gmail account was hacked?

If somebody else may have accessed your Gmail account, changing the password is important but it should not be your only step. You should also check signed-in devices, recovery information, forwarding rules, filters and other account settings for changes you did not make.
