You can delete Gmail without deleting your entire Google Account, or you can delete the whole Google Account and everything connected to it. These are very different actions, so before deleting anything, make sure you know which one you actually want.
Do you want to delete Gmail or your whole Google Account?
If you delete Gmail only, your Gmail address and email are removed, but you can continue using the same Google Account for other services such as Drive, YouTube and Google Play. If you delete your entire Google Account, you also lose the data and services connected to that account, including Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Photos and other Google content.
Removing a Gmail account from a phone or email app is different again. That only removes the account from that device and does not delete the Gmail address or Google Account.
Before you delete your Gmail account
Deleting Gmail can affect more than the messages in your Inbox. Your Gmail address may be connected to your bank, social-media accounts, shopping accounts, subscriptions or other websites, so change those accounts to another email address before deleting Gmail.
You may also want to save your existing email before anything is removed. Google lets you export Gmail messages and other account data, which gives you a copy to keep outside the account.
If you are deleting Gmail because you want to leave Google for another email service, choose the replacement first. Comparing Gmail alternatives before deleting the old address gives you somewhere to move important accounts and messages.
Do you need to delete Gmail just to change your email address?
Not necessarily. Google now allows some users with an existing Gmail address to change the main Google Account email to another address ending in @gmail.com.
If the option is available on your account, your existing Google data remains in the same account and your previous Gmail address becomes an alternative email address. Messages sent to the old and new Gmail addresses can continue to reach the same account.
To check, open your Google Account settings and go to Personal info, then Email and Google Account email. If you see an option to change the Google Account email, you may be able to choose a different Gmail address without deleting the account.
If you simply want a completely separate account instead, creating a new Gmail account is safer than deleting your existing one first.
How to delete Gmail without deleting your Google Account
You can remove Gmail while keeping the rest of your Google Account.
- Sign in to the Google Account that contains the Gmail address you want to delete.
- Open your Google Account settings.
- Select Data & privacy.
- Find the section for data from the apps and services you use.
- Select Delete a Google service.
- Sign in again if Google asks you to verify your identity.
- Find Gmail and select the delete option beside it.
- Enter an existing non-Gmail email address that you want to use with your Google Account.
- Open the verification email Google sends to that address and follow the instructions.
Your Gmail address is not deleted until the replacement email address has been verified. Once that is complete, the rest of the Google Account can continue using the non-Gmail address.
What happens when you delete Gmail?
Once Gmail has been removed, you can no longer normally use that Gmail address to send or receive email. Google says Gmail emails and settings are deleted after 30 days, while the rest of the Google Account remains available through the non-Gmail email address you added.
The old Gmail address is not released for somebody else to register. Google says the address cannot be used by another person in the future.
How to delete your entire Google Account
If you want to remove Gmail and everything else associated with the Google Account, you need to delete the Google Account itself rather than only removing Gmail.
- Sign in to the Google Account you want to delete.
- Open Data & privacy.
- Scroll to the options for managing or deleting your data.
- Select Delete your Google Account.
- Review the information Google shows about what will be lost.
- Follow the instructions to confirm the deletion.
Deleting one Google Account does not delete other Google Accounts that you own.
What do you lose if you delete the whole Google Account?
Deleting the Google Account is much broader than deleting Gmail. Depending on what you use the account for, you can lose data and access connected to several Google services.
- Gmail emails and the Gmail address
- Google Drive files
- Google Calendar data
- Google Photos stored in the account
- contacts stored only in the Google Account
- Google Play content and purchases connected to the account
- YouTube and other Google services that use the account
You may also use the Google Account to sign in to websites and apps outside Google. Change those accounts to another sign-in method or email address before deleting the Google Account where possible.
How to save your Gmail emails before deleting the account
If there are messages you may need later, export them before deleting Gmail. Google’s data-export tools can create an archive containing Gmail data, including message contents, attachments, labels and various Gmail settings.
Creating a backup does not move your email to a new provider automatically. It simply gives you a copy of the data so that it is not stored only inside the Gmail account you are about to remove.
Deleting Gmail from a phone does not delete the Gmail account
If your goal is simply to stop seeing an account on your phone, you probably do not need to delete Gmail. Removing a Google Account from an Android phone, iPhone, Gmail app or another email app removes it from that device, while the Gmail address and Google Account continue to exist.
This distinction matters because phones and apps sometimes use wording such as Remove account or Delete Account when they only mean removing the account from that particular device.
Can you recover a deleted Gmail account?
Sometimes. If you removed Gmail from an otherwise active Google Account, Google may allow you to restore the Gmail address, although some or all of the old emails may no longer be recoverable if enough time has passed.
If you deleted the entire Google Account, Google says a recently deleted account may sometimes be recovered. Recovery is not guaranteed, particularly if the account was deleted some time ago.
If you deleted an account accidentally and want it back, recovering your Gmail account should be attempted as soon as possible.
Can somebody else use your deleted Gmail address?
No. Google does not make a deleted Gmail address available for another person to register, which helps prevent somebody else from later receiving messages intended for the previous owner.
It also means that deleting a Gmail address is not a way to free the username so that you can immediately create another Google Account using the same address.
What if it is a work or school Gmail account?
If the Gmail account is supplied by your employer, school or another organisation, it may be controlled through Google Workspace. In that situation, account and Gmail-service deletion may be controlled by the organisation’s administrator, so contact the administrator before trying to remove the account or its Gmail service.
