A uniform resource locator also known as URL is a specific character string which constitutes a reference to a particular resource. In most of the web browsers the URL of a web page is displayed on the top, inside the address bar. It is technically a type of uniform resource identifier but in most technical and verbal discussions URL is commonly used as a synonym for URI.URL’s are normally used for web pages i.e. http, but can also be used easily for file transfer and emailing.

In an email a URL can be inserted by simply copy pasting it. A standard http URL consists of the following:

  • Name of the scheme, also called protocol.
  • A colon along with two slashes.
  • A host.
  • Full path of the resource.
